St. George was first settled in 1861 by early Mormon pioneers who
were sent down to the area by their prophet, Brigham Young. Young
sent them here to grow cotton, grapes, and silk since shortages
of these items were expected due to the Civil War. With the hot
summers, mild winters, and agricultural abilities here, Southern
Utah earned the nickname of Utah's Dixie with reference to the southeastern
part of the country.
